This is the subwoofer component of my first home hi-fi design and build. I dabbled with car audio in my teens but never anything this deep and DIY. I debated whether to share this project here, since this has been a place about surfing hardware. But as I’ve followed my curiosity into sound I’ve appreciated how the domains of surfing and music and the instruments that enable their expression are related.
In a future post I’ll share more about the complete system which couples this woofer with two two-way bass reflex speakers powered by the same JBL 328C coaxial driver that OJAS discovered. Stay tuned for that.

Neal Purchase Jr’s duo concept has captured my imagination for awhile so I thought a low rockered 611F blank would be a perfect opportunity to apply it. Significant double barrel concave beginning near the center and running all the way out the tail. Otherwise a restrained shape to let the fins do the talking. Neal graciously shared his specs for the fin placement and the fins are from Flying Diamonds of California. Resin art by Derek Jackson.

This board has nothing. No features. No name. Just a reduced blend of curves that looks simultaneously like every shortboard I’ve ever seen and none in particular. I guess that’s the point to sort of depart from focusing on features and benefits and go with a board that’s easy to forget about, disappearing from perception while paddling and riding.
